Its latest location is in Cootamundra about 90km west of where the park ranger who was shot last year is said to have been a koala. Koalas are protected under the Endangered Species Act. It is believed they have moved north from the west coast as the land has expanded and they're now found in New South Wales, Queensland and South Australia. In an update, the park authority said in a statement today it had been notified of the discovery of the koala. The park authority's spokeswoman said the koala appeared to have been shot near the Cootamundra Wildlife Reserve while wandering in the rainforest on Wednesday morning. "We believe it was shot in the rainforest but we are yet to make any identification of a cause of death," the spokeswoman said. "We are still gathering evidence and will take further action to determine the cause of death. "If we determine that it is indeed a koala, the koala will no longer be considered endangered and will then be returned to its native range." The raid, conducted near the intersection of South 5th Street and North 6th Street, brought an initial search warrant to the Los Angeles Police Department, and brought the FBI and Homeland Security agents into the area to assist with the investigation. The bust was led by Assistant Chief Dave Moore. The investigation is being handled by a joint task force, which includes the Los Angeles Police Department's Special Operations Bureau, the Department of Justice's Public Integrity Unit, and Immigration and Customs Enforcement's Enforcement and Removal Operations. The operation is being conducted by Special Agents Greg Miller and Scott Cray, Los Angeles Police Department Special Investigations Unit, and the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Homicide Division. Criminal charges were filed against one or both of the suspects and may potentially result in more arrests in the future, said LASD Lt. Col. John Jurgensen. "This is not about any drugs," Jurgensen said. "This is an operation to look at the whole picture, because this one drug lab was really big and the money that's being used in the investigation can be a lot. If we can make this work that I think we are now doing, then I think we can go through this very, very long process without anything more than we did with the raid last week." No one was injured in the operation. An investigation by a federal law enforcement agency, ICE's Homeland Security Investigations, continues. (©2015 CBS Local Media, a division of CBS Radio Inc.
