A national report on pertussis and pneumonia that was conducted over a number of months revealed an alarming increase in cases across the country, and the highest incidence occurring in the outer northern belt between Perth and Darwin. Between December 2015 and February 2016, 567 pertussis cases were reported in the northern northern belt — the region from around the outer north west to the Kimberley and south west to the Northern Territory. The highest incidence was seen in the central western fringe of the north central belt where between September 2016 and February 2017, the report said. Most of the pertussis cases were from three age groups: two teenagers aged 12 months to 16 years, four teenagers aged 14 years to 15 years and 14 years to 16 years. Three of the cases were unvaccinated children aged 3 to 6 years. According to Professor Brian Smede, head of the pediatric infection research unit at the Queensland Health Sciences Centre at Brisbane City University, pertussis cases are usually thought of as being of "young, healthy children and teenagers". "But the number of pertussis cases is increasing and it's very likely that they're for other parents because in these cases, children will be having infections and have some very serious disease to their immune system." The Queensland Health Sciences Centre has already begun a vaccination drive through the entire north western, inner northern and central northern belt, with another two vaccination centres planned for the north east. The centre is also currently expanding its work to northern NSW and WA. "These are people who would not have been vaccinated otherwise and can no longer get vaccinated because of infection. So we should be raising awareness of the disease to encourage more vaccination — which has been very successful in this area." The report by Professor Smede's team found that in just three months' time, there were a total of 1,069 pertussis cases in Queensland, which represented a 10.8 per cent increase from the same period the previous year. The highest overall reported numbers were reported for July 2016, when 2,835 pertussis cases were reported. The largest increase happened between June 2016 and June 2017 — with 634 pertussis cases reported. This was followed by the north central belt, where there were 631 cases, from September 2016 to February 2017. Dr Paul Revell, director of the Queensland Health Sciences Centre, told AM that because of the increased number of cases, some schools will start vaccinating children in September 2017. "They will not let terrorists enter <Khamisah> to the east of the city," he was quoted by state-run al-Sharq al-Awsat as saying. Syrian forces had earlier begun to make significant gains against Islamic State militants on the ground in the eastern Homs countryside. The air strikes came hours after U.S. President Barack Obama signed a bill that extends an existing U.S. campaign targeting the terror group from Iraq to Syria. 'Awareness is the most important factor in the fight to destroy ISIL' President Obama on Wednesday renewed his call to cut the militant group's supply route to Western countries. "The problem is that there has been a significant buildup of ISIL's supply routes and we have been increasingly aware of it," Obama said in a speech in Washington, the Oval Office of his administration. The United States, Iraq and the coalition to help the Syrian regime against Islamic State militants now have an "extremely limited amount of time," Obama said, while Iraqi and Russian air strikes have destroyed an estimated 30 of its tanks, 30 of its vehicles, 1,000 of its tanks and other weaponry since last week. "We have a very good understanding of where these vehicles are, where they are going, who these people are and who's driving the convoy," Obama said. A spokesman for the Iraqi government said the government and its armed forces had conducted "a very intensive air operation in the Al-Fujar area against ISIL vehicles" in eastern Homs province.
